When I was growing up I my Dad talked to us about the significant historical events in his life and how he remembered exactly where he was at the time they happened, or he found out about them.
He’d talk about the Cuban Missile Crisis and the asssisnation of JFK.
I often wondered if I would have the same thing.
Then the death of Princess Diana occurred,
AND
September 11, 2001.
For me, I can remember the exact moment I found out these events occurred.
With Princess Diana’s death, I was at a friend’s wedding. I had left the dance floor, and traveled the hallways to use the ladies room. On the way, I passed the hotel bar and glanced up at the TV. It was then that I found out about her death. Needless to say, I kept the sad news to myself during the festivities.
On September 11, 2001, I was in a hotel in San Diego with my Husband. The night before we’d been out and decided to sleep in before going to the zoo. I woke up to more than a dozen voice mail messages on my phone from my family. They lived on the East Coast, and were frantic to find me.
I rolled out of bed, turned on the TV and the first image I saw was a plane flying into the towers.
From there, the rest of my day was surreal, as I’m sure it was for many others. Along with sad, very sad.
Unfortunately, I understand now what my Dad had been saying.
Eleven years later. I remember.
Do you remember were you were?

I am not sure we can forget. I remember when and where I was. I was teaching outside D.C and everything shut down.

I agree, although I think over time memories might fade. Some memories. My hope is the generation after us, and the one after that, and the one after that doesn’t forget. Much like our generation, not apart of WWII, must remember so that it is not repeated. You know?
Not many days can I say with such accuracy–” I remember…” But this one I can. I remember with great detail so much from that day. I think it’s our job to remember. That’s how we give it honor. And our other job is to have hope. Even if it’s a teeny tiny hope :)
Yes, I agree, it is our job to remember. And have hope.

I remember both those events quite distinctly as well. It is true – some things impact you so greatly that they become a part of you. I cannot imagine ever, every forgetting.
